Lace now supports SeedSigner, giving you another way to protect your digital assets with fully open-source, air-gapped signing.

This is the first step in a broader expansion of hardware wallet support in Lace, with support for Keystone, a purpose-built commercial hardware wallet, arriving soon.

Whether you build your own signing device or choose a purpose-built hardware wallet, Lace is giving you more ways to secure your assets without compromising on self-custody.

With this integration, Lace becomes the first major Cardano wallet to support SeedSigner. As the Cardano app for SeedSigner continues to evolve through community development, Lace will continue supporting new capabilities as they become available.

It's another step towards a simple idea that has always guided Lace: you should decide how you secure your assets, not have that choice made for you.

Lace does not hold or recover your private keys.

What is SeedSigner?

SeedSigner is a fully open-source signing device built from affordable, off-the-shelf components. Every part of its hardware and software is open source, meaning anyone can inspect how it works, verify the code, or even build one themselves.

Unlike our currently supported hardware wallets, which participate in brief interactions with an internet-connected device, SeedSigner communicates entirely through QR codes. There is no USB connection, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.

Here's how it works:

  • You create a transaction in Lace.
  • Lace displays the transaction as a QR code.
  • SeedSigner scans the QR code and shows the transaction details on its screen for you to review.
  • Once you approve it, SeedSigner signs the transaction while keeping your private keys securely on the device.
  • SeedSigner displays a new QR code containing the signed transaction, which Lace scans to complete the process.

At no point do your private keys leave the device or connect to the internet.

Why air-gapped signing matters

Keeping your private keys offline is one of the most effective ways to protect your digital assets.

Air-gapped signing removes direct connections between your signing device and the outside world. Rather than plugging into a computer or communicating wirelessly, transactions move between Lace and SeedSigner using QR codes that you choose to scan.

By reducing how devices communicate, air-gapped signing helps reduce potential attack surfaces while giving you complete control over every transaction you approve.

For many people, that extra layer of separation provides greater confidence that their private keys remain exactly where they belong: under their control.

Some people prefer a fully open-source, do-it-yourself signing device. Others prefer a commercial hardware wallet designed and manufactured for them. Neither approach is right for everyone.

Lace is built to support both, because self-custody isn't one-size-fits-all.

Community innovation in action

SeedSigner's Cardano support is being delivered through a Project Catalyst-funded community initiative led by developer Angel Castillo. Angel is an engineer at Input Output; the Catalyst grant was awarded to an independent venture and the work was carried out separately from his IO role. The subsequent integration of SeedSigner support into Lace was funded separately through IO's Lace budget.

The project is bringing full Cardano transaction signing to SeedSigner through a series of public milestones. From seed management to animated QR communication and transaction signing, the work is being delivered openly under the Apache 2.0 licence.

It's a great example of how innovation happens across the Cardano ecosystem. Community members identify opportunities, receive funding from the Cardano Treasury through Project Catalyst, and build open-source tools that benefit everyone.

This isn't a one-off integration. As the Cardano app for SeedSigner grows, Lace will continue supporting new capabilities as they become available.
